Beatrice and the POGs is my first full-length children’s book, a middle grade book intended for kids between the ages of 8-12. I am immensely proud of this book and look forward to working on the second book of the series, Beatrice and the POGs Fight the Bracas due out in the spring of 2019.
This book started off as a fun summer project with my daughter, who was 5 at the time. She came up with this crazy idea of space alien kids who each had powers that were unique to their home planet. These alien kids made up a group called the POGs, or Protectors of the Galaxy. The POGs were tasked with protecting the galaxy from Scarab, an evil alien who wanted to steal all the power buckets in the galaxy. Power buckets were how aliens traveled between planets. If Scarab had all the power buckets, he would control all the aliens in the galaxy. And yes, my daughter came up with this idea! I quickly grabbed a pen and paper and scribbled furiously as she rattled off descriptions and names of each alien – Rala, Samma, Padinny, Keena, Graniten, Cannie, and Jana.
We never finished the story, but I always kept the notebook close. In 2017, I approached my publisher at AcuteByDesign and got the green light to write the first Beatrice book. My daughter, then 8, had a great time reading, editing, and offering ideas to the book as I wrote, wrote, and wrote some more. Then one day, it was done! I found a tremendously talented artist named Jane Elliott who produced beautiful watercolor illustrations of each alien. And just like that, our fun summer project became a published book.
Beatrice and the POGs is a great book for children around the ages of 8-12. Purchase your copy today and help spread the word that Beatrice and the POGs are here to save the galaxy!
